Mumbai’s 11-year-old Shahyan Razmi, who is probably the youngest participant in the Manisha National Billiards and Snooker Championship at PYC Hindu Gymkhana stole the show with back-to-back wins on day One. Playing in the sub-junior billiards category, Shahyan ousted Tamil Nadu’s MF Dhanish Ahmed 168-98 in the first round. Later he prevailed over West Bengal’s Tanveer Dhawan 181-165. Both cueists were going neck to neck in the initial stage but as the game progressed Shahyan took lead and maintained it till the one hour buzzer. His elder brother Rayaan Razmi, also moved ahead by beating West Bengal’s Hamza Murad 204-124 in the same category. Top seed S Srikrishna of Tamil Nadu justified his ranking with a massive 423-110 win over Punjab’s Bhavneet Walia. The current national champion Srikrishna received a bye in first round and later he came up with a 65 and 102-point breaks to score the highest total of the day. Meanwhile, another Mumbai player and second seed Sparsh Pherwani also entered pre-quarterfinals with an easy 205-131 win over Punjab’s Jaspreet Singh. The tournament was inaugurated by noted actor Nana Patekar. Rajan Khinvsara, vice president of Billiards and Snooker Federation of India (BSFI), Kumar Tamhane, honorary secretary, PYC Hindu Gymkhana, Vijay Bhave, president, PYC Gymkhana, Shashank Halbe, billiards secretary, PYC and Salil Deshpande, vice president (BSFI) were present on the occasion. Maharashtra’s former Ranji coach Surendra Bhave anchored the event.
