Mumbai: Amit Sapru’s timely break of 80, proved to be a big boost as it helped PCL ‘Beach Boys’ (Park Club) defeat BG ‘Phantoms’ (Bombay Gymkhana) by 668-622 points in a pre-quarter-final match of the BSAM-The Chembur Gymkhana Billiards League 2017, played at The Chembur Gymkhana billiards hall, late on Thursday evening.

In another last 16 encounter played on the side table, KG ‘Four & Half Men’ (Khar Gymkhana), a team captained by Rishabh Thakkar but comprising mainly of youngsters, including 13 year-old Sumehr Mago, defeated Radio ‘Startups’ (B.P. Radio Club) 588-512 points.

Park Club started the match with a cumulative team handicap of 140 points as against Bombay Gymkhana’s 210, which was a difference of 70 points.

Bombay Gymkhana were provided with a flying start as Nitesh Madaan (+20 handicap) scored over Park Club’s Vishal Gehani (+35) by a comfortable 200-128 points (by 72 points) margin to increase the handicap to 142. However, in the second game, Sapru with a steady effort, which included the break of 80, turned things around as he went on to defeat Neiro Vakil 200-73 (by 127 points), which helped his team to reduce the deficit to just 15 points going into the third and final game.

Later, Lalit Jham who was left with the task of scoring 200 points as compared to Bombay Gymkhana’s Mehernosh Billimoria, who required to score 185. Jham rose to the challenge and with some clever safety play managed to come through to seal Park Club’s victory and a place in the last 8 round.

Meanwhile, in the Kjar Gymkhana and Radio Club match, Sparsh Pherwani (+40) won the first game against Shahyan Razmi (+85) by 200-75 points. Later, Rishabh (-60) rattled up a break of 86 during his 200-88 win against Raayan Razmi (+65) in the second game, before Sumehr (+70) scored the 138 points needed for a win in the third game to wrap up the match in Khar Gym’s favour. Earlier Sparsh Pherwani (+40) beat Shahyan Razmi (+85) 200-75.
